I am a descendant of people from Carrigaholt, the BREEN/McGrath families. They emigrated after the famine. Is there a catholic cemetery? Anyone still there with those surnames?

I have been researching my family history and would welcome any info on Michael Keating (son of Edmund & Catherine)& Bridget Keating (daughter of Thomas Keating & Catherine Lilles)of Carrigaholt who came to Australia in 1865 with 6 children on the "Lobelia". Three older daughters Catherine, Mary & Bridget remained in Clare. Catherine Finnell was living in Co Clare when Michael died in 1890.
Thanks Pat

We were in Carrigaholt/Loop Head a few weeks ago. Enjoyed it very much, thank you. Had a wonderful meal at the Long Dock. I want to drop a line to someone in West Moveen. If I just address it to the person, West Moveen, will it get there. Is there a postal code? Thanks!

just curious, have been to your town a couple of times--great grandmother was born there 1858(give or take a year)died in 1924 in new orleans. She was Mary Catherine Canty --she has well over 300 grand, great, great great grandchildren--would you like us back ? (joking, but if things don't get better here we may try)

This is a question for someone to ask the "Oldest Living Residents", please?! On the beach at the end of the village square is the famous & much-photographed 'Carrigaholt Palm Tree'. I believe it is a native of New Zealand, a 'Cordyline australis' or 'Cabbage Tree'. Does anyone know when or how it came to be there, please? I am thinking that a returning emigrant to New Zealand brought the seed home --- perhaps one of the soldiers on leave during WW1 or WW2? Or maybe it just came from a local nursery?

My friend Verity and I spent five beautiful days in Carrigaholt, touring around the coast. The Dolphin watching trip was superb and seeing the Dolphins will remain with us forever. We stayed with Ann Collins-Murphy at her B&B. She made us feel so welcome and we slept so well. Thank you. Everyone we met was so friendly. Visiting Carrigaholt is like stepping back to a much time when life was much slower.

So, it took a washout at the castle for you to find the house? My Uncle Paddy told me it was there 40 years ago, and there is more than just that old house there, under the ground. If my Uncle Barney or my Dad was still around he could have told you a few stories more about what is there. I wish my Grandfather would have written down the stories, and thank goodness I have audio tapes of my Dad telling the stories about life in Moyarta. God Bless all in Carrigaholt. Greetings to Morrisey's and O'Gormans. Its been ten years since my last visit. Hope to see you all soon.

In reply to Bernard Hedderman of Tamworth, our ancestors were neighbours, and intermarried at Rahona East. Would you (or any others interested) like to contact me regards family research notes? Our other Carrigaholt area relatives include Foleys, O'Neils, Murrays, McMahons, O'Briens, O'Dwyers, etc etc Further to an earlier request for police / garda information, there was a Ryan there in the 1920s who married a Margaret Ginnane. Their son, Ned Ryan is alive & well in Houston, TX aged 82. Several of the Carrigaholt lads joined the Shanghai Municipal Police, and I hope to extend a website to detail the Clare connection. All help appreciated. Murray.Ginnane@ihug.co.nz

In reply to Steve Haynes of Sydney, there is an old Moyarta Cemetery on the right, about a mile north and west from Carrigaholt, on the main road to Kilkee. A more modern cemetery is near the beach, between Carrigaholt and Dunaha. GoogleEarth now has excellent satellite and uploaded photos ofCarrigaholt. Murray.Ginnane@ihug.co.nz

Hi folks, I will likely be coming over to your area some time this year to follow up on some research into John McGuire and Bridget Troy from Doonaha who arrived in Australia in the late 1800's and wondered if anyone could tell me if Doonaha has it's own cemetery or people were buried at a cemetery in Carrigaholt. thanks Steve
